The topic for the meeting I went to on Thursday 4th of June 2009, was “Get Rich Working from Home”. The speaker for the meeting/ presentation was Joseph Albahari, the designer and owner of Linqpad. During the meeting he explained to us through his experiences, and through his knowledge the key ways of getting rich, working from home.
He first started to explain to us some of the steps to go through before beginning the building of your program. These were, come up with an idea, write a marketing plan, write version 1.0 of the free product and then create a website and launch the product. The 3 points you will need to be able to achieve this are, the skills, ability to design a ui and business analysis skills.
He explained about active income and passive income, active income is where, you
Have developed a complex product and need to continuously expand and employ, and passive income is where it’s a simple product, that can stay small, and allows you to do other things. When you have during developing or after the product has been developed, you will get people approach you. The types of these people are Businessman, The salesman and the domain expert.
Cheap software is always favoured over expensive software, this helps with marketing. When marketing, perceive it as fun and not a duty. An example he used was when you advertise the price of your product, advertise like this:
$27 $19 Special Price – Limited Time Only
Writing your price like this gave Joseph a 30% pay rise in just 3 weeks.
Three ways to get your product advertised are having a Free and Premium version, a Time Trial or advertising the product. Get involved with the audience you are trying to attract, start contributing to forums, give freebies and test your product, don’t spectate. When advertising experiment and only change one error at a time, so you can find out exactly what’s causing your ad to fail.
The website tips stated by Joseph are keeping it simple, clean, professional, use hosting, a server with at least 50 GB a month and read the reviews of your product. Make the updates automatic, include new parts of your product in help menu, and fix just critical errors.
For licensing people will try pirate your software, so you need strong licensing, also make the utility activations based. Lock the activation code to the CPU and motherboard and always sign the license, this will stop hackers making keygens. The speech presented by Joseph, was excellent, it was very interesting, and very understandable.
